According to an Associated Press report, Randolph Steve Webster, a former publicity executive at Universal Television Group and GSN, was arrested on Friday for allegedly wiretapping the FX cable network after he left his position there in 2001.
Released on a $10,000 bond, Webster is accused of using a toll-free number and password to listen in on staff meeting conference calls at FX - where he was VP of publicity until July 2001 - between July 31, 2001 and January 20, 2004. The report indicates that Webster faces up to three years in prison if he is convicted.
"If anything happened, it was an error in judgment without any criminal intent," Steve Meister, Webster's lawyer, is quoted as saying.
Following his stint at FX, Webster was with the Game Show Network as VP of corporate communications and marketing planning. Most recently, he served as senior VP for communications at Universal Television Group.
